Healthy Beauty
Sharing is one of the most beautiful and rewarding things we can do in this lifetime. Tannis Picks shares information that may be of value to you. Over the years, I have researched and discovered a number of personal products that for me, promote a healthier lifestyle. Here are some of my picks. Note: I am not paid to advertise, promote or sell any of these products; I make no claims or recommendations whatsoever as to any illness, treatment or cure.

Naturally Fresh Deodorant
TCCD International has created a great, natural deodorant that contains none of the harmful aluminums or parabens that are used in anti-perspirants. In some studies, aluminums have been linked to breast cancer. Made with natural mineral salts, Naturally Fresh Deodorant works by inhibiting bacteria growth. It is NOT an antiperspirant, so you will still sweat but the sweat remains relatively odor free. I use the fragrance-free formula and it works extremely well. To combat perspiration, I apply natural cornstarch baby powder after the deodorant has dried. I’ve also purchased Naturally Fresh Deodorant for family and friends; so far I’ve received nothing but positive feedback. Cost: about $3.50 retail. I purchase the spray rather than the roll-on; this prevents the deodorant from becoming contaminated.
Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
Clays have been used since ancient times to treat arthritis and skin ailments. It is said that Cleopatra used clay from the Nile and the Arabian Desert for her beauty rituals. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay is composed of natural, bentonite clay from Death Valley, California. Not only is the price right, but I have found it to work well both as a facial mask and as an additive to the bath. When using the clay for facials, it can be mixed with water, apple cider vinegar or witch hazel. For me, water works best; vinegar and witch hazel cause the clay to dry faster than I’d like. When adding the clay to a bath, I dissolve about ½ cup in the stream of running water, toss in some natural sea salt or Epsom salt and enjoy a mineral bath worthy of a spa. Cost: about $10.00 retail for a jar that will last months, if not a year.
Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Gel
Lily of the Desert Aloe gel reportedly contains only certified organic leaves grown in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. While it is sold as ingestible, I instead use it daily on my face, scalp and any scratches or cuts. I follow it up with a drop of natural jojoba oil, to moisturize. I like this brand of aloe gel because it reportedly contains the maximum level of naturally occurring aloepoly-saccharides, enzymes, and acids. What’s more, it is priced right. Cost: about $8.00 for a 32 oz bottle that will last quite some time.
Desert Essence Jojoba Oil
Used by Native Americans for centuries, jojoba oil moisturizes the skin without leaving oily residue. Its molecules are small and thereby absorbed quickly. Jojoba is said to effectively cleanse clogged pores, soothe skin irritation and prevent flakiness on the scalp. It makes for an excellent addition to hair pomade and is great as an aftershave. The oil is pressed from plant seeds native to the American Southwest. Almost any brand of pure, jojoba oil works well for me; I often buy Desert Essence and also like this company’s tea tree oil.
Transdermis Scar Therapy
Emu oil has been used for centuries by Australian aborigines for treating wounds, bites, burns and damage caused by the sun. The Emu is an ostrich-type bird that is indigenous to Australia; Emu oil is known to have curative and anti-inflammatory properties. Transdermis Scar Therapy contains Emu oil and was recommended to me by my dermatologist. Studies have shown that it causes dramatic improvement in scar healing and appearance. For me personally, it has turned out to be a great product.
